What is an LLM?

An LLM, or Large Language Model, is like a super-smart robot that has read billions and billions of words from books, websites, and documents [1]. It learned patterns in how words go together, kind of like how you might predict that "peanut butter and ___" is probably followed by "jelly" [2].

How does it work?

The LLM is really good at guessing what word should come next in a sentence [2]. It does this over and over againโ€”word after wordโ€”to write out full sentences and paragraphs, like a really advanced autocomplete on your phone [2][5].

What can it do?

You can talk to an LLM like ChatGPT and ask it questions, and it will write answers, tell stories, help with homework, or have conversations with you [1][2].

What's different from regular AI?

LLMs are a special type of AI that focuses on understanding and creating language [4]. While all AI is smart in different ways, LLMs are specifically trained to be language experts [4].
