ELI5: quantum-computing
// explanation
What is quantum computing?
A quantum computer is a super-powerful computer that works in a completely different way than regular computers [1][4]. Regular computers use bits that are either 0 or 1, like light switches that are either off or on, but quantum computers use something called "qubits" that can be 0, 1, or both at the same time [1][3].
Why does it work differently?
Quantum computers use strange rules from quantum physics that only work at tiny scales in the universe [3][4]. One special trick is called "superposition," which means a qubit can exist in multiple states at once, kind of like flipping a coin that's spinning in the air and hasn't landed yet [1].
What makes it so powerful?
Because qubits can be multiple things at once, quantum computers can check many possible answers to a problem all at the same time, instead of checking them one by one like regular computers [1][4]. This makes them super fast for certain types of very hard problems.
What can it solve?
Quantum computers are especially good at solving really complicated puzzles that would take regular computers thousands of years, like breaking secret codes or discovering new medicines [4].
