ELI5: how-wifi-works
// explanation
What is WiFi?
WiFi is like an invisible messenger that sends information through the air using radio waves, just like how radios and cell phones work [1][2]. Your phone, computer, or tablet has a tiny radio antenna inside that can catch these invisible signals [2].
How does it send messages?
Your device and a WiFi router (a box that connects to the internet) are like two-way radios talking to each other [1]. The router sends radio waves carrying your data, and your device picks them up with its antenna and understands the message [3][4].
What can block it?
Walls, metal, water, and other electronic devices can get in the way of these invisible radio waves, kind of like how a hill blocks a radio signal [4]. That's why WiFi works better when you're closer to the router and fewer things are in between [3].
How do you use it?
Your device searches for available WiFi signals around you, and when it finds one, it connects and can use the internet without needing a cable [5]. It's like your phone automatically finding radio stations in your area [1].
