ELI5: what happens after something gets sucked into a black hole
// explanation
What is a black hole?
A black hole is like a giant cosmic vacuum cleaner in space with super-strong gravity that pulls everything toward it [5]. Nothing can escape once it gets too close, not even light [5].
What happens when something falls in?
As you fall toward a black hole, gravity pulls much harder on your feet than your head, stretching you like spaghetti while also squeezing you from the sides [2][3]. This weird stretching is called "spaghettification" [3].
Does it disappear forever?
Black holes don't keep everything inside forever—they actually slowly leak out radiation and lose matter over time [4]. Eventually, things inside can escape in a very slow way [4].
What does this mean?
Even though black holes are super strong, they're not magic trash cans that make things vanish completely—the matter eventually gets released back into space [4].
