ELI5: mitosis
// explanation
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is like when a cell makes a copy of itself [1][4]. The cell has a set of instruction books called chromosomes, and it makes an exact copy of each one, then splits them between two new cells so each one has a complete set [1][2].
Why does it happen?
Your body needs to make new cells to help you grow bigger, heal cuts, and replace old worn-out cells [4]. Mitosis is how cells create these identical copies of themselves [1].
What does it look like?
Inside the cell, the chromosomes line up in the middle like kids in a line at recess, then they get pulled to opposite sides of the cell [4]. Then the cell squeezes in the middle and splits into two cells, each with their own complete set of instructions [1].
How is it different from making babies?
When your body makes new cells for growth and healing, it uses mitosis to make identical copies [4]. But when making sperm or egg cells for babies, cells use a different process that mixes DNA from two parents [1][2].

Mitosis is the process by which a cell replicates its chromosomes and then segregates them, producing two identical nuclei in preparation for cell division.
Mitosis is a part of the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells in which replicated chromosomes are separated into two new nuclei. Cell division by mitosis is anย ...
