ELI5: spaced repetition
// explanation
What is spaced repetition?
Spaced repetition is like reviewing your favorite toy or book over and over, but with bigger breaks between each time you look at it [1][2]. Instead of reading something once and forgetting it, you read it, wait a bit, then read it again, then wait longer and read it one more time.
Why does it help your memory?
Your brain is like a muscle that gets stronger when you use it [1]. When you review something right before you're about to forget it, your brain works harder to remember it, making the memory stick longer in your head [1][5].
How do you actually do it?
You can use flashcards or write down facts you want to remember [2]. Review them soon after learning, then wait a few days and review again, then wait even longer and review one more time [5]. The bigger gaps between reviews help your brain hold onto the information better.
Why is it so good for studying?
This method is proven to work really well because it matches how our brains naturally forget and remember things [1][3]. Instead of cramming everything the night before a test, spaced repetition spreads learning out over time, so you remember way more [3].
