ELI5: rumination
// explanation
What is rumination?
Rumination is when your brain gets stuck playing the same sad or worried thought over and over again, like a song stuck on repeat [1][2]. It's like your mind keeps replaying a bad moment or worrying about something bad that might happen, and you can't seem to turn it off [5].
Why does it happen?
When something stressful or upsetting happens, your brain tries to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it [4]. But sometimes instead of solving the problem, your brain just keeps thinking about it in circles without actually helping you feel better [1].
What does it feel like?
It feels like being trapped in a loop where the same sad or anxious thoughts keep coming back, making you feel worse and worse [3]. Imagine trying to stop thinking about an embarrassing moment, but the harder you try, the more your brain brings it back up [5].
How do you fix it?
You can break the cycle by doing something that distracts your mind, like exercise, talking to a friend, or focusing on something you enjoy right now instead of what happened [1][5]. Sometimes talking to a counselor or therapist can help you learn tricks to stop these stuck thoughts [3].
