ELI5: psychological projection
// explanation
What is psychological projection?
Psychological projection is when you see your own bad feelings in other people instead of in yourself [1][2]. It's like when you're being mean and grumpy, but you think everyone else is being mean and grumpy to you [3].
Why does it happen?
Your brain does this to protect your feelings [4]. When you have thoughts or feelings that make you uncomfortable or sad, your mind tries to hide them by pretending someone else has those feelings instead [3].
What does it feel like?
Imagine you're feeling jealous, but instead of admitting it, you start thinking that your friend is jealous of you [2]. You're sure they have the bad feeling, even though really you're the one with it [5].
How do you stop it?
The first step is noticing when you're doing it [4]. Ask yourself: "Am I seeing something in someone else that I'm actually feeling myself?" Talking to someone you trust or a therapist can help you understand your real feelings [4].
