ELI5: pagefile
// explanation
What is a pagefile?
A pagefile is like your computer's emergency notebook [1][3]. When your computer's main memory (RAM) gets too full, Windows writes down information on your hard drive to free up space, just like writing notes when your desk is cluttered [1][3].
Why does your computer need it?
Your computer has limited RAM, which is super fast memory that programs use [1][3]. When you run too many programs at once, RAM fills up, so Windows uses the pagefile on your hard drive as backup memory [1][3].
What happens when it's being used?
Your computer slows down because the hard drive is much slower than RAM [1][3]. It's like having to run to a filing cabinet every time you need information instead of having it on your desk [1].
How do you make your computer faster?
You can add more RAM so your computer doesn't need to use the pagefile as much [1][3]. You can also close programs you're not using to free up memory [1].
