ELI5: migratory birds
// explanation
What are migratory birds?
Migratory birds are special birds that travel long distances between different places, kind of like taking a really long road trip every year [5]. They fly to warmer places when it gets cold, then fly back home when spring arrives [8].
Why do birds migrate?
Birds migrate because they follow the seasons, flying south when their home gets too cold and there isn't enough food to eat [6]. When spring comes and it warms up again, they fly back to where they started [5].
What makes migration so hard?
The journey is super dangerous for birds because they have to fly really far without much rest, and they might run into bad weather or get lost along the way [8]. Some birds fly thousands of miles, which is like you running across your whole country without stopping!
How do people help migratory birds?
People protect migratory birds by keeping their habitats safe and making rules so hunters don't hurt them during their journey [1][4]. Scientists study birds to understand their migration better so we can help them [5].
