ELI5: jungian psychology
// explanation
What is Jungian psychology?
Jungian psychology, also called analytical psychology, is Carl Jung's special way of understanding how our minds work [2][4]. It's like Jung created his own map of the brain that's different from what his teacher Freud drew [2].
Why did Jung create it?
Jung wanted to explore the hidden parts of our minds that we don't usually think about, kind of like secret rooms in a house that we forget exist [4]. He believed our unconscious minds contain special patterns that all humans share, called archetypes [4].
What is the shadow and individuation?
Your "shadow" is like the parts of yourself you try to hide or don't want to admit you haveโJung said accepting these parts helps you grow [3]. Individuation means becoming your true, unique self by understanding all parts of who you are, kind of like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly [4].
How do Jungian therapists help?
They help you explore your dreams and unconscious mind to discover who you really are inside [4]. By understanding your archetypes and shadow, you can become more complete and authentic [3].
