ELI5: emotional regulation
// explanation
What is emotion regulation?
Emotion regulation is like having a remote control for your feelings [1]. Just like you can turn down the volume on a TV, you can learn to calm down your big emotions by using special tricks, like taking deep breaths or thinking happy thoughts [1].
Why do we need it?
Sometimes our feelings get too big and loud, and we might do things we don't want to do, like yelling or being mean [2]. Learning to manage our emotions helps us make better choices and feel better [3].
What does it feel like when you're good at it?
When you're good at emotion regulation, you can feel upset but still stay calm enough to think clearly, kind of like how a superhero stays calm during a big fight [1][4].
How do you get better at it?
You can practice calming down by breathing slowly, thinking about problems in a different way, or doing things you enjoy like drawing or playing [1][2].
