What does a VPN do?

A VPN is like a secret tunnel for your internet traffic [2]. Instead of sending your messages directly to websites where everyone can see them, a VPN scrambles them up (encrypts them) and sends them through a protected tunnel to a special VPN server [2][4]. This makes it much harder for people to spy on what you're doing online.

Who can't see your data with a VPN?

A VPN hides your internet activity from your internet provider (the company that gives you internet) [1]. It also hides what you're doing from other people on the same wifi network as you [1]. When you use a VPN, websites see a different address (called an IP address) instead of your real one [3].

What does a VPN NOT protect?
