ELI5: cognitive dissonance
// explanation
What is cognitive dissonance?
Cognitive dissonance is when your brain feels uncomfortable because you believe two things that don't match up [3]. It's like when you think you're a good person but you do something mean—those two ideas clash and make you feel icky inside [2][4].
Why does it happen?
Your brain likes when all your beliefs and actions line up nicely, like matching socks [2]. When they don't match—like saying you care about the environment but driving everywhere instead of walking—your brain gets stressed and creates an uncomfortable feeling [1][4].
What does it feel like?
Cognitive dissonance feels like being bothered or uncomfortable inside, even if nobody else can see it [1]. It's that guilty, confused feeling you get when you know you're not living up to what you believe in [3].
How do you fix it?
You can fix it by either changing your belief, changing your behavior, or finding a new way to think about the situation that makes them fit together [2][4]. For example, if you love junk food but want to be healthy, you could exercise more, eat healthier, or decide that occasional treats are okay [4].
