ELI5: asteroids and meteoroids
// explanation
What are asteroids and meteoroids?
Asteroids and meteoroids are like the leftovers from when our solar system was formed about 4.6 billion years ago [2]. Asteroids are the bigger space rocksโlarger than a meter acrossโwhile meteoroids are the smaller pebble-sized pieces floating around in space [1][3].
Why are they different sizes?
Think of it like breaking a cookie: asteroids are the big chunks, and meteoroids are the tiny crumbs [3]. Scientists divide them up this way so we can talk about them clearly, with asteroids being anything bigger than about 3 feet across [3].
What happens when they fall to Earth?
When a meteoroid falls through our sky, we call it a meteorโthat's the bright streak of light you see (also called a shooting star) [1]. If it actually hits the ground, then it's called a meteorite [1].
Where do they come from?
These rocky objects have been floating around since our solar system was created, left over from all the space dust and rocks that stuck together to make planets [2].

Asteroids are smaller than a planet, but they are larger than the pebble-size objects we call meteoroids. A meteor is what happens when a meteoroid โ a smallย ...
Asteroids, comets, and meteoroids are chunks of rock, ice, and metal left over from the formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.
Asteroids are usually defined as being larger than 1 meter (3.28 feet) in diameter. Free- floating rocky objects smaller than asteroids are called meteoroids,ย ...

Our goal is to create a database of digital 3D shape models that would be suitable for describing the shapes of meteoroids and small monolithic asteroids.
