What is an aldol addition reaction?
An aldol addition is when two molecules containing a special carbon group called a carbonyl (a carbon with a double bond to oxygen) stick together to make a bigger molecule [1][3]. Think of it like two LEGO bricks snapping together to form something larger.
Why does it happen?
One of the carbonyl molecules gets activated by a base or acid, which makes it "sticky" at a special spot called the alpha carbon [2]. This sticky version then grabs onto the carbonyl group of another molecule, and they bond together [1].
What does the product look like?
After they join, you get a new molecule with a hydroxyl group (an OH part) attached, which is why it's called a "beta-hydroxy" product [3]. If you heat it up afterward, the water can leave and create an even stronger bond [1].
How is it useful?
