ELI5: aldol addition reactions Molecule A (the "grabber") H has a special H like a Lego stud Step 1: Helper Base steals the H H Base Now A is "sticky" (enolate ion) Molecule B (the "target") C=O aldehyde or ketone like a magnet waiting to be grabbed Product: Aldol! A and B snapped together + + OH new C-C bond formed plus alcohol group THE BIG IDEA Aldol = "AL" from aldehyde + "OL" from alcohol. Two molecules snap together like Lego bricks to build a bigger molecule. Why Does It Matter? Build bigger molecules Chemists use this to make medicines, flavors, and natural compounds. It creates a new carbon-carbon (C-C) bond -- the backbone of life! Lego Analogy A + B = AB A has a sticky stud (H atom) The helper (base) pops it off Now A snaps onto B's C=O hole You get a bigger brick + OH That OH is the "alcohol" part Key Words Enolate = sticky A (H removed) Base = the H-stealer helper C=O = the sticky hole on B Aldol = the new bigger molecule Has both OH and C=O groups eli5.cc

What is an aldol addition reaction?

An aldol addition is when two molecules containing a special carbon group called a carbonyl (a carbon with a double bond to oxygen) stick together to make a bigger molecule [1][3]. Think of it like two LEGO bricks snapping together to form something larger.

Why does it happen?

One of the carbonyl molecules gets activated by a base or acid, which makes it "sticky" at a special spot called the alpha carbon [2]. This sticky version then grabs onto the carbonyl group of another molecule, and they bond together [1].

What does the product look like?

After they join, you get a new molecule with a hydroxyl group (an OH part) attached, which is why it's called a "beta-hydroxy" product [3]. If you heat it up afterward, the water can leave and create an even stronger bond [1].

How is it useful?

Chemists use this reaction to build bigger, more complex molecules from simpler ones, which is really important for making medicines and other useful compounds [3].
