ELI5: active recall
// explanation
What is active recall?
Active recall is when you try to remember something from your brain instead of just reading it again [1]. It's like playing a memory game where you test yourself rather than looking at the answer right away [5].
Why does it help you remember better?
When you force your brain to pull information out of memory, it strengthens that memory [3]. Your brain moves information from short-term memory (things you just learned) to long-term memory (things you remember forever) [3].
What does it feel like to use active recall?
It feels harder than just reading your notes again, because your brain has to work to find the answer [5]. But that hard work is actually what makes your memory stick better [1].
How do you practice it?
You can use flashcards, cover up your notes and try to explain things from memory, or ask someone to quiz you [1][4]. The key is trying to remember without looking at your notes first [5].
