ELI5: why does gps work even when you're in the middle of nowhere
// explanation
What is GPS?
GPS is like having a magical compass in the sky that tells you exactly where you are [8]. Instead of using a regular compass needle, it talks to special satellites floating above Earth to figure out your location [8].
Why does it work everywhere?
GPS satellites are always circling Earth in space, so they can see you no matter where you are - even in the middle of nowhere with no buildings, roads, or cell towers around [8]. Your device just needs to see the sky to receive their signals [5].
How does your phone know where it is?
Your phone receives signals from multiple satellites at the same time, kind of like how you can figure out where a sound is coming from by listening with both ears [8]. By comparing these signals, it calculates exactly where you are [8].
Does it need the internet?
No! GPS works without WiFi or cell service because it's just receiving signals from space - it doesn't need to send information back to the internet [8].
