ELI5: why do we need to eat every day
// explanation
Why do our bodies need food every day?
Your body is like a car that needs gas to run—food gives your body energy to play, think, and grow [2]. Every time you move, think, or even sleep, your body uses up the energy from food, so you need new fuel to replace it [2].
What does food do inside your body?
Food gives your body three main things: energy to move and think, building blocks to grow and fix itself, and special nutrients (like vitamins) to keep everything working right [4]. Without these things, your body starts to slow down and get sick [2].
Why can't we just eat once a week?
Your body burns through the energy from food pretty quickly—usually within a few hours [2]. If you only ate once a week, you'd run out of energy partway through the day, kind of like a phone running out of battery before you can charge it again [2].
How does your body tell you it's hungry?
When your body runs low on energy, it sends signals to your brain saying "feed me!" [2]. This hungry feeling helps make sure you eat often enough to keep your body running smoothly [2].
