> ELI5: why do we need to eat every day Your body is like a car A car needs fuel to move. Your body needs food to do EVERYTHING run, think, breathe, grow. Food you eat it every day breaks down ENERGY Energy your "fuel tank" fills up powers Everything! run, think, breathe grow, play, sleep but tank almost empty Empty tired, hungry can't focus so you need to eat again! Why EVERY day? After eating Few hours later Your body uses up energy ALL the time even sleeping! Food = Fuel + Bricks Energy to move & think Building blocks to grow & fix your body Skip food = problems Hard to think or focus Grumpy & cranky (hangry!) Can't grow big & strong Like a car with no gas stops! TL;DR Food gives your body the energy and materials it needs to keep going and since your body uses it up constantly, you need more every day. eli5.cc

Why do our bodies need food every day?

Your body is like a car that needs gas to run—food gives your body energy to play, think, and grow [2]. Every time you move, think, or even sleep, your body uses up the energy from food, so you need new fuel to replace it [2].

What does food do inside your body?

Food gives your body three main things: energy to move and think, building blocks to grow and fix itself, and special nutrients (like vitamins) to keep everything working right [4]. Without these things, your body starts to slow down and get sick [2].

Why can't we just eat once a week?

Your body burns through the energy from food pretty quickly—usually within a few hours [2]. If you only ate once a week, you'd run out of energy partway through the day, kind of like a phone running out of battery before you can charge it again [2].

How does your body tell you it's hungry?

When your body runs low on energy, it sends signals to your brain saying "feed me!" [2]. This hungry feeling helps make sure you eat often enough to keep your body running smoothly [2].
