ELI5: what is the stockdale paradox
// explanation
What is the Stockdale Paradox?
The Stockdale Paradox is a way of thinking that means you face the hard, scary truth about what's happening right now, while still believing everything will turn out okay in the end [1][4]. It's like knowing you're in trouble but not giving up hope.
Why is it called a paradox?
It's called a paradox because it seems backwardsโyou're supposed to either be super happy and pretend bad things aren't happening, OR be sad and think everything is hopeless [5]. But the Stockdale Paradox says you can do both at the same time: admit the problem AND stay confident.
Where did it come from?
Admiral James Stockdale was a military leader who got captured during the Vietnam War and survived terrible conditions [7]. He realized that the prisoners who survived were the ones who faced how bad things really were while still believing they would make it out alive.
How do you use it?
You use it by being honest about your problems instead of hiding from them, but keeping your faith and hope that you'll succeed [3][4]. It helps you stay brave when things are really hard.
