ELI5: what is the conflict in myanmar
// explanation
What is happening in Myanmar?
Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia that has been fighting wars for a very long time—since 1948 when it became independent [2]. It's like a neighborhood where different groups keep arguing about who should be in charge and how people should live [3].
Who is fighting?
The main fight is between the military (soldiers who run the government) and other groups of people who want different kinds of government [3]. There are also tensions between different religions—the Buddhist majority and Muslim groups—which has caused a lot of pain [1][4].
What happened to people?
Because of all the fighting, millions of people had to leave their homes to stay safe [5]. By the end of 2023, almost 2.6 million people had fled their homes because of the violence [5]. This is one of the world's biggest refugee crises right now [4].
Why is it still happening?
The military has been fighting for control since 1947 and keeps trying to stay in power, which keeps the conflict going [2][3]. Different groups want different things for the country, and nobody can agree on how to fix it [2].
