ELI5: what is a blanket statement
// explanation
What is a blanket statement?
A blanket statement is when someone says something is true for everyone or everything, even though it's probably not [2]. It's like saying "all kids love ice cream" when really some kids don't like it at all [2].
Why is it a problem?
Blanket statements aren't very helpful because they're too general and often wrong [4]. They can make people not trust you because they know the statement doesn't fit every single situation [4].
What's an example?
Saying "video games are bad for you" is a blanket statement because it doesn't explain that some games might be okay in small amounts, while others might not be good at all [2].
How do you avoid them?
Instead of saying something applies to everything, you can say "some people" or "many times" or "usually" to be more honest and fair [4].
