What is tulip mania?
Tulip mania was when people in Holland during the 1600s got so excited about colorful tulip flowers that they paid crazy amounts of money for the bulbs, like how kids might trade toys they don't even have yet. [1][3] People were buying and selling tulip bulbs that weren't even planted yet, just hoping to sell them for even more money later.
Why did people go so crazy for tulips?
Tulips were brand new and exotic flowers that had just arrived in Holland, and some had beautiful striped patterns that made them super rare and fancy. [1][2] Everyone wanted them, so prices kept going up and up, and people thought they'd never stop getting more expensive.
What happened when the bubble popped?
Eventually, people realized tulips weren't actually worth all that money, so nobody wanted to buy them anymore at those high prices. [2][3] People who had spent their life savings on tulip bulbs suddenly found out they couldn't sell them, and lots of folks lost all their money.
Why do people still talk about it?
