ELI5: taos hum
// explanation
What is the Taos Hum?
The Taos Hum is a mysterious low buzzing sound that some people in Taos, New Mexico can hear, kind of like a refrigerator humming but much lower and deeper [1]. Only a small number of residents seem to be able to hear it, which makes it really strange [1].
Why does it happen?
Nobody knows for sure where the Taos Hum comes from, and that's what makes it so mysterious [5]. Scientists and investigators have looked into it since at least the 1990s, but they still can't figure out what's causing it [1].
What does it sound like?
The hum is a very low buzz that ranges from 30 to 80 Hz, which is deeper than most sounds you hear every day [1]. People say it gets worse at night and seems louder when it's very cold or very hot outside [2].
Why can't everyone hear it?
Not all people in Taos can hear the hum, which is one of the biggest puzzles about it [1]. Some people might have ears that are sensitive to very low frequencies, or maybe only certain people's brains notice the sound [1].
