ELI5: supreme court
// explanation
What is the Supreme Court?
The Supreme Court is the most important court in the United States, kind of like the final referee in a game [2]. It has nine judges called justices who work together in a special building in Washington, D.C. [2]
Why does it exist?
When people disagree about what the laws mean or if a law is fair, the Supreme Court gets to make the final decision [2]. It's like having a super-smart teacher who decides who's right when other teachers can't agree [1].
What does it do?
The Supreme Court reads cases about important legal questions and decides what the Constitution really means [2]. When they make a decision, it becomes the law that everyone in America has to follow [2].
Who works there?
Nine justices work at the Supreme Court, including one Chief Justice who is the leader [2][3]. One of them right now is Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. [3].
