ELI5: social construct
// explanation
What is a social construct?
A social construct is something that only exists because people agreed it should exist. [1][2] It's not like a rock or a tree that would be here even if nobody was around—it only exists because we all decided together that it does. [1]
Why do we have them?
Humans need ways to organize and understand the world, so we create agreements about what things mean and how to categorize people and ideas. [1][3] For example, we all agreed that certain colors and toys are "for boys" and others are "for girls," but these aren't real differences—we just decided it. [4]
What are some examples?
Things like money, countries, holidays, and class distinctions are all social constructs. [2][3] Gender and race are also social constructs—they seem real and natural, but they only exist because societies created and agreed upon these categories. [4][5]
Why does this matter?
Understanding that something is a social construct means we can change it if we want to, because no natural law says it has to stay the same. [2][1] If people decided together to do things differently, social constructs could be different tomorrow.
