ELI5: sleep work
// explanation
What is shift work sleep disorder?
Shift work sleep disorder is when your body gets confused about when to sleep because you work at weird times like nights or early mornings instead of during the day [3]. It's like trying to sleep when the sun is up and stay awake when it's dark—your body doesn't like that!
Why does your body get confused?
Your body has an internal clock that tells you when to sleep and when to be awake, and it's used to sleeping at night [3]. When you work nights or changing shifts, your clock gets all mixed up and doesn't know what time it should be [4].
What does it feel like?
People with this problem have a really hard time falling asleep, staying asleep, and feel super tired during work [3]. It's like your body is saying "I want to sleep NOW" but you have to work, or "stay awake NOW" but your body wants to sleep [3].
How do you fix it?
You can talk to a doctor who might suggest light therapy, staying on a schedule, or sometimes medicine to help you sleep [3]. Getting enough sleep—about 7 to 8 hours—is really important for your health and staying safe at work [1].
