ELI5: sleep apnea
// explanation
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is when your breathing stops and starts over and over again while you're sleeping, like your body keeps forgetting to breathe [1][2]. It's kind of like when you're playing a video game and it keeps pausing and unpausing on its own.
Why does it happen?
Usually, your airway gets blocked while you sleep, so air can't flow in and out of your lungs [4]. This happens because the muscles in your throat relax too much, or sometimes the tissues in your throat are too big.
What does it feel like?
You might snore really loudly, and you wake up a lot during the night without remembering it [1]. In the morning, you feel super tired and grumpy, even though you think you slept all night.
How do you fix it?
Doctors can help you use a special machine that gently pushes air into your nose and mouth to keep your airway open while you sleep [4]. Sometimes losing weight or sleeping on your side helps too.
