ELI5: second order thinking and first principles
// explanation
What is first principles thinking?
First principles thinking is like taking apart a toy to see how it really works instead of just believing what someone told you about it [5]. You ask "why?" over and over until you get to the basic truth, like how a magician reveals their trick [1].
What is second order thinking?
Second order thinking means thinking about what happens AFTER the first thing happens—like knowing that eating candy makes you happy now, but your teeth hurt later [3]. It's thinking two steps ahead instead of just one [1].
How are they different?
First principles thinking digs backwards to find the true basics of something, while second order thinking looks forward to see all the effects that will happen next [5]. One breaks things down, the other traces what comes next [3].
Why should you use both?
Together, they help you make much better decisions because you understand the real truth AND you know what will actually happen in the future [1][4].
