What is product management?

Product management is like being the captain of a ship that's building something people want to use [2][3]. A product manager decides what to build, talks to customers to understand what they need, and makes sure the team builds it right [1][2].

Why do companies need product managers?

Without someone steering the ship, engineers might build cool things nobody wants, and designers might make things pretty but hard to use [2]. A product manager makes sure the final product actually solves real problems that customers have [1][4].

What does a product manager actually do every day?

They talk to customers to understand their problems, work with engineers and designers to plan what to build, make decisions about what features matter most, and check if people are happy with the product [3][4][5].

How is it different from just managing a project?

Project managers focus on getting work done on time and on budget [1]. Product managers care about that too, but their main job is making sure you're building the right thing that customers actually want and will use [2][3].
