ELI5: power of attorney
// explanation
What is a power of attorney?
A power of attorney is a special piece of paper that says "I give permission for this person to make decisions for me." [1][3] It's like giving someone a note that lets them act like you at the bank or doctor's office.
Why would someone need one?
Sometimes you might be too busy, too sick, or too far away to handle your own stuff like paying bills or signing important papers. [1][2] Instead of worrying, you can ask someone you trust to do it for you.
What can they do?
Depending on what you write in the paper, your person can do just one thing (like sell your house) or many things (like handle all your money). [4] You get to decide how much power they have.
How do you make one?
You write it down, sign it, and usually have witnesses or a notary watch to prove it's real. [5] Then the person you picked can start helping you right away.
