What is lucid dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is when you're having a dream and you suddenly realize you're dreaming while the dream is still happening [2]. It's like being in a movie but knowing you're watching a movie at the same time.

Why does it happen?

Your brain has a special ability called metacognition, which means thinking about your own thinking [3]. Sometimes while you're dreaming, this part of your brain wakes up enough to notice "Hey, this doesn't make sense—I must be dreaming!" [3]

What does it feel like?

Imagine playing a video game where you suddenly realize it's a game and you can control what happens next [2]. You might be able to fly, change the scenery, or do impossible things because your dreaming brain knows the normal rules don't apply.

How do you practice it?

People use special techniques and induction methods to try to have lucid dreams more often [1]. It takes practice and patience, kind of like learning to ride a bike.
