ELI5: local area network
// explanation
What is a local area network?
A local area network (LAN) is like a group of computers and devices in your house or school that all talk to each other [1][2]. Instead of each device trying to reach the internet on its own, they're all connected together in one place so they can share things like printers and internet [3].
Why do we need them?
Imagine if every computer in your school had its own separate internet line โ that would be wasteful and messy [2]. With a LAN, all the computers in one building can share one main internet connection and send files to each other super fast [3].
How do they work?
Devices in a LAN are connected by cables or wireless signals, kind of like how phones in your house can all connect to the same WiFi [1][2]. They all understand each other's addresses so information gets to the right place [3].
What can you do with it?
With a LAN, you can print from any computer to one shared printer, play games with friends on other computers, or send files between devices without going to the internet first [2][3].
