> ELI5: kessler_syndrome When Space Gets Too Messy to Use Like a game of bumper cars... but the cars explode into more cars Earth Satellites orbit Earth crash! 2 satellites crash! makes Thousands of tiny pieces! hits MORE satellites! makes MORE debris hits MORE... result: BLOCKED! orbit = minefield The Toy Box Analogy One toy breaks sharp pieces everywhere breaks MORE toys can't play anymore Space junk works the same way! Why It's Dangerous A bullet travels: ~1 km/s Space junk travels: ~8 km/s Even a tiny bolt can destroy a satellite! Why We Care no GPS no weather no TV no space If orbit fills with junk... We lose the tools we use every single day! eli5.cc

What is Kessler Syndrome?

Kessler Syndrome is like a cosmic traffic jam in space where there are so many broken satellites and space trash floating around that they keep crashing into each other [1][3]. Imagine a crowded parking lot where cars are bumping into each other so much that it creates more broken cars, which then cause even more crashes [1].

Why does it keep getting worse?

When two pieces of space junk collide, they break into many smaller pieces, and those pieces can crash into other satellites, creating even more debris [4]. It's like when you drop a glass and it shatters into lots of tiny pieces that are hard to clean up and dangerous to step on [4].

What would happen?

Once Kessler Syndrome really gets going, collisions would happen so fast and create so much new debris that we might not be able to send new rockets or satellites into space safely [3]. It would be like the sky becoming too crowded and dangerous for airplanes to fly [1].

How can we stop it?

Scientists are working on ways to clean up space debris before it becomes a problem, like designing satellites that safely fall out of orbit when they're done being used [4].
