ELI5: health insurance
// explanation
What is health insurance?
Health insurance is like a safety net that helps pay for doctor visits and medicine when you get sick or hurt [1]. You pay a little bit of money every month, and then when you need to go to the doctor, the insurance company helps pay the big bills so you don't lose all your money [5].
Why do people need it?
Going to the hospital or seeing a doctor can cost a lot of money—sometimes thousands of dollars [6]. Health insurance makes sure families don't go broke if someone gets really sick, because the insurance company shares the cost with you [1].
How do you get it?
You can get health insurance through your job, buy it yourself, or get help from the government if you don't have much money [3]. If you have big changes in your life like getting married or having a baby, you can sign up for new insurance [3].
What does it cost?
You pay money called a "premium" every month to have insurance, and then you might also pay a little bit when you actually go to the doctor [6]. The more you pay each month, usually the less you pay when you visit the doctor [5].
