What is diabetes?

Diabetes is when your body has too much sugar in your blood [2][3]. Your pancreas is like a sugar-controller in your bodyโ€”it makes something called insulin that helps move sugar from your blood into your cells where it can be used for energy [3][4]. When your pancreas doesn't make enough insulin or your body can't use it well, sugar stays stuck in your blood instead [3].

Why does it happen?

Your pancreas might not make enough insulin, or your body's cells stop listening to the insulin it does make [3][4]. It's like having a key (insulin) that doesn't fit the locks (your cells) anymore, so the sugar can't get inside [3].

What does it feel like?

People with diabetes might feel very thirsty, need to pee a lot, feel tired, or have blurry vision [5]. It happens because all that extra sugar in your blood makes your body work harder [2].

How do you fix it?

There's no cure, but you can control it with healthy eating, exercise, and sometimes medicine [2]. Keeping your blood sugar levels normal helps prevent problems like heart disease and eye damage [1][3].
