ELI5: depression
// explanation
What is depression?
Depression is when your brain gets stuck in a sad mood, kind of like when a toy gets wound up too tight and won't unwind. [1][2] It's not just feeling sad for a day or twoโit lasts a long time and makes it hard to do things you normally enjoy, like playing with friends or eating your favorite snacks.
Why does it happen?
Sometimes our brains don't work the way they should, and the chemicals inside get out of balance, making it really hard to feel happy. [1][4] It's not your fault, just like getting a cold isn't your faultโit just happens to your body.
What does it feel like?
Imagine wearing really heavy, wet clothes all dayโeverything feels harder and slower, and you don't want to do things that normally make you smile. [3][5] Even fun activities feel boring, and you might feel tired a lot.
How do you fix it?
Doctors can help with special talking sessions (like talking to someone about your feelings) or medicine that helps your brain feel better. [1][4] It usually takes time, kind of like how a scraped knee takes time to heal.
