ELI5: database
// explanation
What is a database?
A database is like a giant organized filing cabinet that lives inside a computer [1]. Instead of storing papers in folders, it stores information (called data) in a way that makes it really easy to find and use [1][3].
Why do we need databases?
When you close a program on your computer, all the information you were working with disappears—unless you saved it somewhere [4]. Databases are like a permanent storage box that remembers everything even after you turn off the computer [4].
What can databases store?
Databases can hold almost any kind of information: names, phone numbers, pictures, scores from games, or anything else you want to keep safe [1][3]. They organize this information in neat rows and columns, kind of like a spreadsheet [1].
How do you use a database?
Special programs called database management systems help you add information, find information, and make sure nothing gets lost or broken [5]. When you search for something online or check your school grades, you're probably using a database behind the scenes [3].
