What is consciousness?

Consciousness is like being awake and noticing things—you're aware of what's happening inside your head (like your thoughts and feelings) and what's going on around you (like seeing colors or hearing sounds) [1][2]. It's what makes you "you" and lets you know that you exist.

Why do we have it?

Scientists aren't completely sure why consciousness exists, but your brain uses special patterns of activity to create this awareness [4]. When your brain has the right kind of electrical signals and information flowing through it, you become conscious of the world around you.

What does it feel like?

Consciousness is every experience you have—like tasting your favorite candy, feeling happy, or being sad [5]. It's the difference between being asleep (when you're not aware) and being awake (when you notice everything).

Why is it important?

Consciousness lets you make choices and decide what to do, rather than just doing things automatically [3]. It makes you able to think about the future, remember the past, and feel like you're in control of your own life.
