ELI5: cholesterol
// explanation
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that your body makes and uses to build cells and create important things like hormones [1][2]. Think of it like building blocks your body needs to stay healthy. Your body actually makes all the cholesterol it needs, but sometimes you can have too much [1].
Why does your body need it?
Your body uses cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and the outer layer of your cells [2]. It's also found in your brain and spinal cord, helping them work properly [4]. Without any cholesterol, your body wouldn't be able to function.
What happens when you have too much?
When you have too much cholesterol in your blood, it can stick to the inside of your blood vessels like plaque building up in a pipe [5]. This makes it harder for blood to flow and raises your risk of heart disease [5].
How do you keep it healthy?
You can help keep your cholesterol at a good level by eating healthy foods, exercising, and listening to your doctor [1][5]. Normal total cholesterol should be below 200 [3].
