ELI5: boltzmann brain
// explanation
What is a Boltzmann brain?
A Boltzmann brain is a silly idea from physics that asks: what if your brain just randomly popped into existence out of nowhere, with fake memories included? [1][4] It's like if all the atoms in the universe randomly bumped together and accidentally made a thinking brain floating in space.
Why would this even happen?
If you have infinite space and infinite time, and atoms are always bouncing around randomly, then eventually by pure luck those atoms might arrange themselves into a brain—just like how shuffling cards forever means you'll eventually get a perfect order. [4][5]
Why is this a problem?
This thought experiment suggests something is wrong with our understanding of how the universe works, because it would be way more likely for a brain to randomly form in a dead universe than for our whole universe to exist with stars, planets, and life the way it does. [2]
What does this tell us?
It's a sign that scientists are missing something important about how the universe actually formed and evolved, so physicists use it to realize their theories need fixing. [2]
