ELI5: ai hallucination
// explanation
What is AI hallucination?
AI hallucination is when a computer program makes up information that isn't real and presents it as if it's true [1][3]. It's like when your friend confidently tells you a made-up fact, but they seem so sure that you almost believe them [1].
Why does it happen?
AI models are trained to find patterns in text, but sometimes they get confused and create false patterns that don't actually exist [1][4]. The AI doesn't really "understand" what it's saying the way you do—it's just really good at guessing what words should come next, and sometimes it guesses wrong [2].
What does it feel like when it happens?
When an AI hallucinates, it gives you information that sounds completely real and confident, but it's actually false or made up [3]. You might ask a chatbot a question and get back a detailed answer that seems perfectly reasonable, but the facts inside are completely invented [1].
How do you fix it?
People are working on ways to make AI better at checking itself and admitting when it doesn't know something [4]. You can also double-check important information from AI by looking it up elsewhere, rather than trusting it completely [3].
